Blue Devils earn 5th straight win

BROOKVILLE — “The name of the game is put the ball in the hole.” That quote from Bob Cousy in the Movie Blue Chips explains the game of basketball in its simplest form.

When James Naismith invented the game with a peach basket, which can be seen at the Hoosiers Gym in Knightstown Indiana, it was to produce an exercise activity inside for people during the winter and putting the ball in the basket the most times would win the game. That remains true to this very day in every level of the game.

The Brookville Blue Devils have raised that idea to a new level, never seen before in the Jeff Davidson era, by defeating Valley View 84-52 last Friday and scoring more than 80 points for the third straight time.

The win lifted Brookville to a record of 15-6 overall and 7-5 in the SWBL Buckeye Division. Brookville will complete the regular season Friday night when the Milton-Union Bulldogs visit BHS. That game will be broadcast on Brookvillesports.com beginning at 7 p.m.

Unlike the first meeting where Brookville rallied in the second half to come from behind to down the Spartans, Brookville took the lead late in the first quarter and never looked back in rolling to the 32-point victory. The win may have been the largest margin of victory over Valley View in Brookville boys basketball history.

In addition, it is the third straight game Brookville has scored more than 80 points. That has not been done in recent memory. Brookville shot 56 percent for the game, the third straight game the Devils shot better than 50 percent from the field.

Brody Denny, the prolific freshman scorer for the Spartans, got Valley View off to a fast start. Denny scored nine points as Valley View led 11-7. Brookville scored the nine of the next 11 points and led 16-13 after the first period of play.

Sixteen points in a quarter is above average in high school basketball. However, Brookville would surpass that total in each of the next three periods of play. Jace Wood had six, Cole Crabtree five, Brendan Fisher three, and Dom King for Brookville in the frame.

In the second stanza Brookville continued to roll up the score to win the second quarter 21-8 to lead 37-21 at the break. Denny of the Spartans had 16 first half points, seven of his teams eight markers in the second eight minutes of play.

Meanwhile Brookville continued to play string music. Brookville drained four three-pointers in the period. Wood had eight, Fisher seven, and Crabtree and Keegan Mehr three points each for Brookville. The Blue Devils had made six three-point baskets in the first half.

Brookville continued the spanking of the Spartans in the third quarter outscoring Valley View 26-15 in the frame. Brody Denny had 13 of those points for Valley View. Brookville saw Cole Crabtree lead the way in the third with 13 points, making a pair of trifectas in the frame.

Wood added a pair of long-distance shots for six points. Braedan Smart scored three points, and Dom King and Nathan Waggoner each added two points. The score was 63-36 Brookville heading into the final stanza.

The Blue Devils cruised in the final eight minutes as they rolled up 84 points for the game. Valley View finished with 52, giving Brookville a 21-16 scoring edge in the period. Brookville points were much more spread out. However, for the first time in his career Waggoner led the team in scoring in a quarter. Waggoner scored four points to wind up with a career high six in the game.

Waggoner is one of those unsung players who just plays hard and does his job when in the game. Brookville has a number of those type of players on this team. Also scoring were Branson King, Smart and Dom King with three points each in the stanza. Fisher, Wood, and Logan Lamb each scored two points for Brookville.

Valley View scoring shows Brody Denny with 32 points and Ty Fritz with seven. The Spartans were 16 of 44 shooting during the game.

Brookville stats show the Blue Devils made 32 of 57 tries during the game for 56 percent. That includes 12 for 23 from long distance for 52 percent. Brookville snagged 36 rebounds and had seven steals. Of the Blue Devils 32 baskets there were 28 assists made. When Brookville is at its best the Blue Devils play good team ball on offense and defense.

Individually, Cole Crabtree had 23 points, three assists, and five steals. Jace Wood had 22 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Brendan Fisher added 12 points, four boards, and four assists. Dom King had seven points, and a double/double with 11 rebounds and 11 assists.

King was outstanding during the game in every phase. Braedan Smart had six points, four rebounds, and three assists. Nathan Waggoner had career high six points. Keegan Mehr and Branson King each had three points. Logan Lamb scored two points.

This Brookville team, with one regular season game remaining is the second highest scoring team in the Jeff Davidson era at Brookville. Brookville has scored 1,364 total points and is averaging the most points ever by a Brookville team under Davidson with 65 points per game.

The 2019 team that went 21-4 scored 1,527 points and averaged 61.1 points per game. This team is tied for the third most wins in a season under Davidson with 15. The 2018 team had 15 wins. The 2017 and 2019 teams each went 21-4. They are tied for the most wins in Brookville boys basketball history in wins for a season.
