4 inducted into TVS Athletic Hall of Fame

WEST ALEXANDRIA — Mark Creech, Angelo Davis, Emily Froment Hemmelgarn and Drew Rivers were all recently inducted into the Twin Valley South Hall of fame in honor of their athletic accomplishments.

In total, 11 new members were inducted into the West Alexandria/Lanier/Twin Valley South Hall of Fame on Friday, Jan. 19. Four for Athletic achievements, three for academic achievements, and four for community service.

The inductees range from the West Alexandria High class of 1946 to the TVS Class of 2012.

Creech is a 1982 graduate of Twin Valley South who played football, basketball and ran track in high school. His most successful sport was football. He was a 4-year letter winner in football. He was All-Cross County Conference in 1979, 1980 and 1981, and first team All-League his junior and senior years. He was All-Preble County his sophomore, junior and senior years, was the team MVP in his junior and senior years, 1st team Southwest District his senior year and All-Area his senior year.

“Mark is high on the list at TVS for tackle totals for individual game, season, and career,” the presentation noted. “He was a tremendous football player who played the game with high intensity and a passion for physical contact.”

In track, Creech was all-conference in the shot put in his sophomore and junior seasons. His best throw in his career was in the 48-plus feet range.

After graduating from TVS, Creech served in the U.S. Army with the 2nd/3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment from 1982 to 1987. Following his military service, he spent 20 years as a machinist, with eight years at Parker Hannifin and eleven years at GM. At the age of 45, he decided to return to school and pursue a career as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). He later worked for LexisNexis.

In addition to his professional pursuits, he has devoted approximately 20 years to coaching youth baseball and football, contributing to the development of young athletes. He has also had the honor of serving as the President of Eaton Athletic Boosters for three years, where he actively participated in supporting athletic initiatives in the Eaton community.

“Mark has been happily married to Sheryl Creech for 41 years, and together, they are proud parents to two children, Ryan, and Bradley,” the presentation concluded. “Their family has expanded to include six grandchildren, consisting of five boys and one girl.”

Davis is a 1998 graduate of Twin Valley South who excelled in football and track, earning eight letters in those two sports He also earned two letters in basketball and played two years of baseball.

In basketball, Davis was 1st team All-Cross County Conference team his senior year. He was the starting point guard on the team that won the league title.

“In football, Angelo was a great running back,” the presentation noted. “He was on the All-Cross County Conference team all four years in high school. He was the Cross County Conference Back-of-the-Year his junior and senior years and was Special Teams Player-of-the-Year in the conference his senior year. He holds the school record for most 1,000-yard rushing seasons with three and holds the Twin Valley South record for most rushing yards in a career with 4,041 yards. As a senior he played in the North vs. South All-Star game.

In track Davis was the Preble County runner-up in the long jump his sophomore and senior years. He was county champion in the long jump his junior year and was part of the state-qualifying 4×100 relay in his junior year. In his senior year he set a new TVS record in the long jump at 21’8 ½ inches. He was county and league runner-up, was district champion in the long jump, placed third at the regional meet and qualified for the state meet. He was also a part of three team league championships.

“It was once said of Angelo that he was a student athlete who did it all and did it all well,” the presentation noted.

Davis graduated from Morehead State University in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in production management. He is the son of Michael and Ellie Davis and currently resides in West Milton with his family.

Hemmelgarn is a 2012 graduate of Twin Valley South. She was the class valedictorian, senior class president and a member of the National Honor Society. She earned eight athletic letters in high school: four in volleyball and four in softball.

“As a high school softball player, Emily was one of the best in the state of Ohio,” the presentation noted. She was first-team All-Cross County Conference all four years in high school, was conference player of the year her freshman and senior years, was Southwest District Softball Coaches Association All-Metro 1st team all four years, and was Ohio High School Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Ohio 1st team her freshman, junior and senior years.

She was honorable mention her sophomore year, and her junior and senior years she was OHSFSCA Scholar Athlete. Along with all of these awards, she was also WHIO Athlete of the week in her junior year and a Fox/ABC “She’s Got Game” honoree in her senior year.

Hemmelgarn pitched three perfect games at TVS. She pitched 17 no-hitters and currently is ranked 11th in the state for number of no-hitters in a career. She holds the following season and career TVS records: Most Home Runs in a Season (nine,) Most Strikeouts in a Season (314,) Most Innings Pitched in a Season (165.33,) Best Earned Run Average in a Season (0.65,) Most Career Home Runs (15,) Most Career Innings Pitched (559.33,) Best Career Earned Run Average (0.80,) and Most Career Strikeouts (1,028.) She is currently ranked 25th in the state in career strikeouts.

Hemmelgarn went on to the University of Dayton after graduating from TVS. She played softball for four years for the Flyers. Her freshman year, she was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Rookie team. She was a four-year NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete. She currently is 10th in career earned run average for the Flyers with an ERA of 2.97, is seventh in strikeouts per seven innings at 4.9 strikeouts, and currently sits 10th in lowest opponent batting average at .251.

She was on the Commissioners Honor Roll for four years, and Dayton All-Academic Roster her senior year. She won the Presidential Scholar Athlete Award her senior year and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Operations and Supply Management. She is currently employed at Henny Penny Corporation. She and her husband Jacob reside in West Alexandria.

Rivers is a 2004 graduate of Twin Valley South who was very successful in cross country and track.

In cross country his sophomore year Rivers was third in the county, third in the league and seventh in the district. He missed qualifying for the state meet by one place when he placed 16th in the regional meet that year.

His junior year, he was county champion, league champion and district champion. That year at the regional he placed sixth, qualifying for the state cross country meet. He placed 22nd in the state meet.

In his senior year, Rivers was once again county, league, and district champion. He placed third in the regional meet once again qualifying for the state meet. As a senior he placed seventh, earning All Ohio Honors.

During his junior and senior years Rivers won 16 cross country meets. He currently holds the TVS cross country record with a time of 16:26.

In track, his freshman year saw him winning the county in the 800-meter race. In his sophomore year he was league champion in the 800 and the 1600. At the district meet he was runner-up in the 1600 and third in the 800, earning a trip to the regional meet in both events.

“Drew’s junior year brought more all-county, all-league and all-district accolades,” the presentation noted. “He finished first in the county and the league in the 800 and 1600 events. At district he was district champion in the 1600 and runner-up in the 800. At the regional meet, Drew was regional champion in the 1600. That earned Drew a trip to the state track meet in the 1600-meter event.”

“Drew’s senior year was magical, he did not lose an individual race that year,” it continued. “He won the 800 and 1600 at the county, league, district and regional meets. At the state meet he was the Ohio Division 3 state champion in the 800 meters. He was also the anchor leg of the 4×400 relay team that was fourth at the state meet.”

Rivers finished his career with several TVS records, which are still TVS records: 800 Meters, 1:54.2; 1600 Meters, 4:26 and 4×400 Meter Relay, 3:26.

Rivers received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Wright State University, where he majored in Business and Education. He has spent his career in medical device sales where he is currently a District Sales Manager for Vatech America. He and his wife Jessica have a two year old son, Forest. They currently reside in Powell, Ohio.
