Devils pull away from Bulldogs

BROOKVILLE — The Brookville Blue Devils on Friday shook off a gritty effort by Milton-Union by pulling away in the final period to win 81-54 and roll to their 16th win of the season. It was the fourth straight game in which Brookville has scored over 80 points and the fifth time this season the Blue Devils have reached the 80-point mark.

The Blue Devils trailed 15-11 late in the first quarter. However, Brookville scored the next nine points to take the lead 20-15 and never trailed again. Coltin Lawson made a short jumper as the buzzer sounded and Brookville led 22-18 after the first quarter of play.

Cole Crabtree led Brookville with a trio of three pointers in the quarter. Keegan Mehr added four points. Dom King, Jace Wood, Coltin Lawson, and Braedan Smart each scored two points. Nathan Waggoner made a free throw in the stanza.

Brookville would win the second quarter by a score of 14-11 to take a 36-29 lead into the intermission. Brookville points came from Wood and Smart each with four markers. Smart had a dunk during the period. Brookville got two points from King, Crabtree, and Waggoner.

The third quarter saw the Blue Devils build up a 56-41 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the period. The frame would end 60-48.. Brookville got seven points from Braedan Smart, six from Jace Wood, four from Dom King, three from Cole Crabtree, and two points each by Brendan Fisher and Coltin Lawson.

Brookville pulled away in the final eight minutes outscoring the Bulldogs 21-6 in the stanza. Points came from Crabtree with seven, including his fourth trifecta of the game. Wood scored five markers including his third long distance shot giving him the hat trick for the night.

Fisher made a three pointer. Mehr had an old fashioned three-point play on a basket and a charity shot. Branson King made a basket late and Dom King made a free throw. The final score was 81-54 giving Brookville a record of 16-6 overall for the regular season.

Stats from the game from Roger Hoover shows Brookville shot 57.4 percent making 31-54 shots. That includes eight of 19 from three-point land. Brookville was 11 of 14 from the free throw line. Brookville had 23 assists, 30 rebounds, and had ten steals. Milton Union shot 47 percent making 22-47 shots. The Dogs were eight of 19 from long distance. Milton snagged 18 rebounds, had nine steals, and dished out 18 assists.

Individual stats show Milton was led by Zach Lovin with 15 points. Braden Schaurer added 11 points and had six assists.

Brookville individual stats show Cole Crabtree with 21 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Jace Wood added 17 points. Braedan Smart had 13 points. Dom King scored nine points, had nine rebounds, and nine assists. Keegan Mehr had seven points, three boards and three assists. Brendan Fisher scored five points and had three assists. Coltin Lawson had four points, Nathan Waggoner three points and two assists. Branson King scored a basket and had two steals.

This group of seniors won 30 regular season games the past two seasons. Seniors are Cole Crabtree, Brendan Fisher, Coltin Lawson, Keegan Mehr, and Jace Wood. The team’s 16 wins this season is the 3rd most wins by a Jeff Davidson coached team in the regular season and overall.

Brookville has scored 1,445 points, an average of 65.7 points per game, which may be the highest points per game average in Brookville boys basketball history. This team has scored the second most points ever by a Jeff Davidson coached team. The 2019 SWBL League Champions scored 1527 points in 25 games, an average of 61.8 points per game.

Brookville will open tournament play on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at Butler against Greeneview at 7:30 p.m. That game will be broadcast on the free internet radio website Brookvillesports.com.
