National Trail not an eclipse viewing site

NEW PARIS — National Trail School will not be available as a place to view the April 8 eclipse.

Some schools are making their stadiums and parking lots available for a price, but National Trail Superintendent Robert Fischer said at the Feb. 27 board of education meeting that he had decided the logistics were just too overwhelming. The school will be closed that day for a “calamity day.”

He joked, “I think it will be too cloudy anyway. After all, this is Ohio!”

He also announced the high school prom will take place at the Gatherings on the Green in Lewisburg from 7 through10 p.m. on Saturday, April 20.

The board recognized many students. Fischer explained Students of the Month are students who not only “do what they are supposed to do in class but go above and beyond in helping others.”

Elementary Students of the Month were Edith Michael, Kindergarten; Landon Brummett, Grade 1; Tristan Barnes, Grade 2; Sawyer Bellamy, Grade 3; Mollie Hardy, Grade 4 and Dane Rodefer, Special.

Middle School Students of the Month were Karson Schweizer, Vincent Ellison and Jessa Barnes in Grade 5; Myra Beery, Liam Summer and Piper Slone in Grade 6; Rebecca Lee, Brooke McMillan and Adaline Jones in Grade 7 and Alorah Croskey, Nate Hale and Wyatt Gebhart in Grade 9.

Those honored in the high school were Chloe Graves, Grade 9; Raegan Holland, Grade 10; Kylie Schul, Grade 10; Miles Rogers, Grade 11; Addison Sparks, Grade 12 and Brayden Atkins, Grade 12.

The board also recognized the middle school WOAC wrestling champions: Gage Bush, 91 lb.; Colt Foster, 116 lb.; Remy Longfellow, 22 lb. and Tommy Toschlog, 134 lb.

Kya Ferguson, Korbin Landes, Levi Lipps and Corbin Rodefer were honored for winning the Preble County Geography Bee. This competition involved both fourth- and fifth-grade students.

Martha Ma won the Preble County Spelling Bee, and Kya Ferguson came in second.

Director of Transportation John Toshlog reported that the district was reporting drivers who do not stop for school buses.

Elementary Principal Ed Eales said Right to Read week was taking place. He said one of the activities was “Read Around the School,” in which students walk around the school while music plays and, when the music stops, the students sit where they are and read for about 15 minutes.

“I’ve heard middle and high school students who tell me they remember that activity from elementary school,” he said.

The board learned that the drama department’s presentation of “Willy Wonka Jr.” the previous weekend had been sold out on both days.

The school will purchase a Ford Expedition for $60,375 to transport small groups such as teams, using funds received from the county as a result of the Norfolk Southern Oxford-Gettysburg Road project.

The March board meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 25 in the Media Center.
