Knick crowned state champion

COLUMBUS — Northmont sophomore Lacie Knick emerged as the state champion in the 125 pound weight class over the weekend at the girls state wrestling tournament.

Knick placed 2nd in the 120 pound weight class last year. Knick, a two time regional champion and a two time state qualifier, finished this season with a stellar 46-1 record. She won all four of her state matches by a fall (pin).

In the opening round Knick won by a fall in 2:47 against sophomore Mackenzie Feltis (30-13) of Vermillion. She then won by a fall in 3:26 over sophomore Auston Brown (42-5) of United Local School (Columbiana County).

Knick then pinned freshman Emma Shephard (27-5) of Massillon Perry in just 31 seconds to propel her into the championship round where she pinned freshman Lily Hendricks (41-6) of Greeneview in 3:14 to win the 125 pound weight class crown.

Knick was tops among an impressive group of local girls that qualified for state.

Eaton junior Caroline Klawon placed 2nd in the 145 pound weight class to finish the season at 37-2 overall.

This was Klawon’s third state tournament appearance. Klawon placed 3rd at state in 2022 in the 155 pound weight class and placed 3rd at state in 2023 at 145 pounds.

Klawon opened this year’s state tourney winning by a fall in 42 seconds over junior Emma Bolyard (30-7) of Hilliard Darby. She then pinned junior Adilyn Mozden (36-9) of Alliance in 2:00.

Klawon then scored a 12-0 major decision over freshman Taylor Owen (38-7) of Black River. In the championship match Klawon lost by a fall in 1:23 to senior Makyah Newlun (49-2) of East Liverpool.

Brookville senior Rita Carey, a three time state qualifier, placed third at 140 pounds to finish with a 45-3 record. Carey placed 2nd at state in 2021 in the 111 pound weight class and won the 130 pound title in 2022.

Carey opened the tournament by pinning sophomore Valerie Hamilton (15-6) of Logan in 55 seconds. She then pinned sophomore Cara Leng (38-9) of Marysville in 1:12 before losing by fall in 5:41 to freshman KyLee Tibbs (39-3) of Gahanna Lincoln.

In the consolation bracket Carey scored an 8-4 decision over junior Abby Green (41-6) of Waverly. She then defeated senior Sophia Taylor (25-5) of Centerville by a fall in 2:55 to take 3rd place.

Eaton freshman Maycee Adams placed 5th in the 105 pound weight class at state to finish the season 38-7 overall. Adams opened the tournament by scoring a 6-3 decision over senior Cecelia Cece Reitter (27-4) of Columbus Academy.

Adams then scored a 10-6 decision over junior Bridget Hilliard (37-4) of Minerva. She then lost by a fall to senior Lauren Ficker (41-2) of Vermillion.

In the consolation bracket Adams faced Reitter again who scored 3-2 decision and went on to place fourth. Adams faced sophomore Leah Marine (37-13) of Washington Court House and scored a 4-2 victory in overtime to place 5th overall.

Brookville senior Molly Luebke placed 5th in the 110 pound weight class to finish the season at 41-5 overall. Luebke opened the tournament with a 15-0 technical fall over junior Mallory Zadel (36-12) of Avon Lake.

She then suffered an 8-1 loss to freshman Mackenzie Carder (35-1) of Olentangy Orange. In the consolation bracket Luebke pinned sophomore Caiden Baird (38-9) of Harrison in 3:27. Luebke then won by a fall in 2:13 over sophomore Madelyn Begert (43-7) of Canal Fulton Northwest.

Luebke lost a 7-1 decision to junior Noel Reinhart (32-8) of Rossford, who went on to place 4th. Luebke won by a fall in 4:10 over Teays Valley senior Ava Miller (36-9) to place 5th.

Brookville senior Lily Zimmerlin (28-11) lost her opening round 145 pound match by a 7-1 decision to senior Kelsey Bryan (27-2) of Maysville.

Zimmerlin bounced back to pin junior Elise Fredritz (30-11) of Carey in the consolation bracket. She then lost a 12-4 major decision to junior Reagan Knapp (45-5) of Pickerington North.

Tri-County North junior Madison Jeffers (14-3) won her first match in the 155 pound weight class at state by a fall in 2:20 against junior Isabella Adams (28-5) of Chippewa.

Jeffers then lost to undefeated senior Kylee Tait (52-0) of Warren by a fall in 5:00. Tait went on to win the 155 pound championship.

In the consolation bracket Jeffers scored a 7-2 decision over junior Jada Weiss (38-3) of Bellbrook. She then lost by a fall in 2:44 to freshman Naomi Gearheart (29-4) of Ashland Crestview.

Jeffers defeated sophomore Natalie Carlisle (33-8) of Lebanon by a fall in 1:57 to earn 7th place.

Eaton freshman Marlee Trantanella lost both of her matches at 120 pounds to end the season with a 24-8 record. She lost to senior Jacee Altaffer (38-6) of Montpelier in the first round and lost by a fall in 1:50 to junior Jocelynn Malone (48-10) of Alexander in consolation.
