Burton strikes out 11 in victory over Bradford

BROOKVILLE — Wind and chilly temperatures Friday didn’t affect Brookville pitcher Grace Burton as she struck out 11 to help lead the Lady Blue Devils to a 7-1 victory over Bradford.

Burton pitched all seven innings, allowed eight hits, no earned runs and issued one walk. She also produced two hits with one double in four at bats.

Brookville took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Melina Davidson reached base on an outfield error making it all the way to second. Rylan Eagle reached on an infield error with Davidson scoring.

The Lady Devils added four more runs in the second inning. Maya Haydon drew a leadoff walk and Makenzie Roesser brought Haydon home with a triple to left field. Roesser scored on a passed ball.

Melina Lucente singled to center and Kara Gardner singled to right with Lucente advancing to third. Gardner stole second and Lucente scored on an error by the third baseman with Gardner advancing to third.

Davidson singled to center to drive in Gardner to give Brookville a 5-0 lead.

Bradford got its lone run in the top of the third. Vivian Harleman reached on a fielder’s choice. Chloe Hocker hit a two out single and advanced to third on an error that allowed Harleman to score.

Brookville added two more runs in the fourth when Burton singled and Lia Viernes came in to pinch run. Eagle singled to center with Viernes reaching second. Viernes advanced to third and Eagle to second on a wild pitch. Haydon followed with a two out single to left to bring both base runners home.

Roesser led the Lady Devils with two hits in three at bats with a triple, one run and one RBI. Eagle went two for four with a run. Davidson went one for four with a run and an RBI. Gardner went one for four with one run.

Haydon went one for three with two RBIs and one run. Lucente one for three with a run.

Harleman took the loss for Bradford. She pitched six innings, gave up 12 hits, six earned runs with one walk and one strike out.

With the non-conference victory Brookville improved to 10-3 overall while Bradford fell to 4-8.
