Baseball roundup: Eagles still in title contention

PREBLE COUNTY — As the high school baseball season approaches the final week of the regular season one Preble County team is still in contention for a league championship.

Eaton remains in control of its own destiny in the Southwestern Buckeye League West Division with two games remaining.

Eagles split, still atop SWBL West

EATON — Despite splitting a pair of league games last week, Eaton remains at the top of the SWBL West standings at 7-4.

Eaton opened last week with a 6-2 setback to visiting Monroe on Wednesday, May 3, but bounced back with a 9-5 win over Oakwood the next night.

Against Monroe, Eaton scored twice in the bottom of the third for a 2-0 lead. The Hornets responded with three runs in the fifth, a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

Eaton managed just two hits, with Brock Ebright going 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored and Brady Rice going 1-for-2 with a double.

Against Oakwood, Eaton fell behind 1-0 after a half inning, but answered with three runs in the bottom of the first.

Eaton extended its lead to 4-1 after three.

The Lumberjacks scored a run in the fourth and three in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead.

Eaton responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game then added four more in sixth to get the win.

Ty Crammer went 2-for-2 with four RBI and a run scored. Dillon Jerdon added two hits, including a double and drove in two runs. Reid Tinstman had a hit, scored a run and drove in one.

Eaton closed out the week with a 13-3 non-league loss to Versailles on Friday, May 5.

The Eagles (10-9) were scheduled to host Arcanum on Monday, May 8 and Valley View on Wednesday, May 10. They will travel to Carlisle on Thursday for the final league game of the season.

Trail falls to North, goes 3-1 on the week

NEW PARIS — National Trail split a pair of Western Ohio Athletic Conference games and won a pair of non-league games to go 3-1 last week.

Trail began the week with a 6-3 win over Franklin-Monroe on Wednesday, May 3.

The Blazers used a four-run fourth to break a 2-2 tie.

Chase Ruebush went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Jamison Watts added two hits, including a double and collected three RBI.

On Thursday, Trail suffered a 6-5 setback at Tri-County North.

North scored five runs in the second and another in the third to take a 6-0 lead only to see Trail battle back with two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth.

For Trail, Ben Browning was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Cooper Lee added a hit and an RBI. Brendan Simpson had a hit, RBI and scored a run.

For North, Braylon Keener went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Carter Lake doubled and drove in two runs and Garner Parlett had a hit and RBI.

Trail won both games of a doubleheader with Northridge on Saturday. The Blazers won 3-2 and 10-0.

Trail, now 9-11 overall and 4-7 in the WOAC, has four games scheduled this week.

The Blazers were scheduled to play at Troy Christian on Monday, May 8. They will host Milton-Union on Wednesday, May 10, travel to Brookville on Thursday, May 11 and play at Lehman Catholic on Friday.

Arrows sweep pair of WOAC games

CAMDEN — Preble Shawnee snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over Dixie on Thursday, May 4 then added a second straight win with a 5-1 triumph over Tri-Village on Friday.

Against Dixie, Grady Hutchinson went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Gavin Schmidt added two hits, including a double and drove in two runs. Colton Strong doubled, scored a run and drove in a run and Dylan Zornes had two hits and scored a run.

Dixie jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Shawnee scored all three of its run in the top of the fifth.

Against T-V, Shawnee fell behind 1-0 after one then tallied a run in the third, three in the fourth and one more in the sixth.

Ashton Agnew was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Xander Davidson was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI. Brayden Doran went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI.

Shawnee improved to 8-7 overall and 6-4 in the WOAC with the wins.

They were scheduled to play Mississinawa Valley on Monday and Valley View on Tuesday. The Arrows will travel to Greenville on Wednesday and will host Franklin-Monroe on Thursday.

North splits pair of 1-run games

LEWISBURG — After beating National 6-5 Thursday, Tri-County North suffered its own 6-5 setback the next day at Ansonia.

The Panthers fell behind 4-0 after one but rallied to take a 5-4 lead with a run in the second and four in the third.

Those would be the last run of the game for North.

The Tigers regained the lead with two runs in the fifth.

Koby Reynonlds led North with three hits and two RBI.

North (8-10, 3-8) was schedule to play Valley View on Monday and Middletown Madison on Tuesday and will close out the week hosting Lehman Catholic on Thursday.

South tops Covington after 2 WOAC defeats

WEST ALEXANDRIA — Twin Valley South closed out WOAC play with a 9-0 setback to Bradford and a 10-5 loss to Franklin-Monroe, before ending the week with a 6-2 win over Covington.

Against Bradford, Cais Kingsley and Chadler Ulrich had the Panthers only two hits.

Against F-M, South led 4-0 after 1.5 innings. The Jets made it a 4-2 game in the bottom of the second and broke the game open with seven runs in the fourth.

Seth Carver had a hit, and two RBI and Brayden Burkett added a double and RBI.

Against Covington, Kasey Blair had hit and two RBI. Burkett had two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Kingsley doubled and drove in a run.

South (9-9, 5-6) is schedule to host Troy Christian on Wednesday, May 10 and travel to Newton on Friday, May 12.
