ENGLEWOOD — The high point of the Northmont School Board meeting held at Northmoor Elementary School on Nov. 20 was a state leadership award presentation to Superintendent Tony Thomas.

Thomas was selected by a panel of his peers from the region to receive the 2023 Buckeye Association of School Administrators (BASA) Exemplary Leadership Award.

The award was originally presented at the BASA Fall Conference in Columbus held Oct. 3-4 at the Hilton Polaris. A re-enactment of the award presentation took place during the board of education meeting.

Board president Linda Blum pointed out some of the reasons she believes Thomas deserved such an award.

“This evening we are taking the time to recognize Tony Thomas’s outstanding leadership and celebrate it as he continues to guide our school district to newer heights of excellence. He has shown unwavering dedication to the educational well-being of our students,” Blum said prior to the presentation.

“His visionary leadership has transformed challenges into opportunities, paving the way for growth within our schools. He fosters a positive inclusive environment for students, staff and for us as a board/leadership team,” Blum said.

“Under his leadership and guidance, academic achievements have soared and extracurricular programs have flourished. He has exhibited a genuine passion for the holistic development of each student. We are truly fortunate to have his inspiring leadership and his positive influence,” she continued.

Blum then introduced David Axner, Ed.D., executive director of Buckeye Association of School Administrators, to present Thomas with the award.

“BASA is an organization that supports superintendents and other district leaders in Ohio – we have almost 900 members,” Axner said. “Tony was awarded the BASA Exemplary Leadership Award. There are 10 regions in the state and he received the award for Region Nine, having been nominated by Paul Otten, superintendent of the Beavercreek Schools.”

Axner listed the criteria for the Exemplary Leadership Award as follows:

• Nomination by peers,

• Community involvement,

• Active professionally,

• Leader of character,

• An innovator and

• Sets an example to peers.

Axner shared comments from Paul Otten (mentioned above) and other superintendents in Region Nine about Thomas, including, “He has a steadfast focus on student learning,” “Consistently demonstrates a commitment to the best interests of students, “He is a leader among his peers,” “Hold him in high esteem, recognizing his ability to lead by example and make tough decisions,” and “Passion and love for ensuring that Northmont students receive the very best opportunities and education.”

“Superintendents in southwest Ohio express gratitude for having Tony as a colleague. Tony is not just a superintendent; he is a true leader and advocate for the betterment of education in Northmont and beyond,” Axner said.

District treasurer Ann Ferraro gave a report on inconclusive, upcoming school funding, state and otherwise, and said she will keep the board members informed as her office receives information.

The next Northmont School Board meeting will be at 6 p.m. on Dec. 11 at Union Elementary School, 418 W. Martindale Road, Union.
