MIDDLETOWN — Brookville split a pair of SWBL Buckeye Division games showing split personalities in the two match-ups.

Brookville dropped a game to Waynesville 60-52 but rebounded with a 65-54 victory over Madison. The Blue Devils are now 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the SWBL Buckeye Division.

Waynesville outscored Brookville 36-22 in the second half to come from behind and defeat the Blue Devils 60-52. It was a game in which the Spartans outplayed Brookville in the second half. The Spartans played good team basketball on both ends of the court while Brookville did not play well on either end of the court.

Brookville led at the half on the strength of its three-point shooting. Brookville drained six long distance shots in the first 16 minutes of play to lead 30-24 at the break. However, in the second half Waynesville extended their defense and the Blue Devils began taking ill-advised three point tries and because they were well defended the shots were off.

Meanwhile Waynesville showed much better patience and worked for good shots and thus took over the game. The third quarter was the main story. The Spartans outscored Brookville 22-11 to take a five-point lead into the final stanza. Then Waynesville pulled away in the final eight minutes by simply working for easy short range shots, mostly layups.

The Spartans outshot Brookville, scoring 62 percent on 23-37 shooting including four of 11 from three-point range. Brookville countered with 38 percent shooting making 19 of 50 tries. Brookville was eight of 23 from behind the arc. In addition the Spartans had the rebounding edge 28-14.

Waynesville scoring shows Connor Berry with 19 points to lead all scorers. Nick Warren added 14 points. Three Spartans each had five points Isaac Squire, Andrew Stupp, and Caleb Sullivan.

Brookville scoring has Dom King with 12; Jace Wood 10, Cole Crabtree with eight points, six assists, and four steals; Brendan Fisher had eight markers; Braedan Smart added eight; Keegan Mehr four; and Coltin Lawson two.

Three nights later Brookville looked like a different team against the Madison Mohawks as they pulled away in the second half to win 65-45. The Blue Devils trailed midway through the second period before ending the first half on a 10-2 run to lead 33-28 at the break. The Blue Devils played unselfish and smart basketball for the majority of the game.

Brookville led after each quarter by scores of 18-16; 33-28; 45-34; and the final of 65-54.

The Mohawks did cut the deficit to two late in the game because of three-point baskets by Grady Combs and Drew Whisman and a Brookville technical foul. However, Brookville ended the game with an eight-point run.

Stats show Madison was 19 of 49 shooting for 39 percent including six of 23 from three-point land. Brookville shot 50 percent making 26-52 shots including six of 16 from behind the arc. Brookville was seven of eight from the foul line.

Madison was led in scoring by Combs with 22. No one else was in double-figures.

Brookville stats show the Blue Devils placed five players in double figures. The last time Brookville had at least five players in double figures was last season against National Trail.

Jace Wood had 15 points and seven rebounds. Dom King had 12 points and seven rebounds. Brendan Fisher tallied 12 points and snagged seven rebounds. Braedan Smart had 13 points and four assists. Cole Crabtree scored 11 points and had four steals. Nathan Waggoner added two points.
