Bekemeier official chief; Hitchcock recognized

EATON — Acting City of Eaton Fire/EMS Chief Andy Bekemeier was officially promoted to Fire/EMS Chief during Eaton City Council’s Monday, Jan. 15, meeting.

Mayor Matt Venable presided over Bekemeier’s swearing-in. Bekemeier was joined by his family to help with the official pinning of his chief’s badge following the ceremony.

This was the second time Bekemeier took the oath, as he was sworn in as the Chief on Friday, Dec. 1.

Bekemeier, who has served as Assistant Fire/EMS Chief since October 2022, has over 16 years of experience in the fire service. He has been with the Eaton Fire /EMS Division since 2013 and was promoted first to lieutenant in January 2020 then to captain in August 2020 prior to becoming Assistant Chief. Bekemeier replaced former Chief Brian Smith, who served the Eaton Fire/EMS for over two decades.

During last week’s meeting, council also recognized Eaton High School Junior Mallory Hitchcock on her 2023 accomplishments in tennis.

In other business, council:

•Held the first reading of an ordinance which will increase the charges for collection of refuse to cover operational and maintenance costs associated with it. Under the amended ordinance, the monthly charge for each residential unit in the city will be $30.71.

•Approved a resolution authorizing the sale of excess property by any division of the City of Eaton for 2024 without competitive bidding to a governmental entity or non-profit agency or alternatively, by means of internet auction.

•Approved a resolution authorizing the city manager to enter into an agreement with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to accept the recently awarded Natureworks Local Assistance Grant, in the amount of $10,928, to purchase new playground equipment for Fort St. Clair Park.

•Approved a resolution authorizing the sale of a 2013 Ford Fusion with the sale price to exceed the amount of $3,500 to an either private, governmental or non-profit entity. The vehicle is an excess car no longer useful to the Eaton Police Division.
