Troop 47 Scouts recap remarkable year

BROOKVILLE — The past year has been extraordinary for Brookville Boy Scout Troop 47, marked by two out-of-state experiences.

The first experience was on the USS Silversides in Michigan, where the boys had the unique opportunity to stay overnight in a submarine.

The excitement continued with summer camp at Camp Crooked Creek in Kentucky, where the Troop broke the camp record for points in campwide games.

Additionally, Troop 47 played a crucial role in reviving the Greenville Treaty Camporee in Greenville. The camporee drew the participation of approximately 250 scouts.

The Troop had one scout, Ryan Clemmons, who completed his Eagle rank to become the Troop’s 101st Eagle Scout. The Troop has four Life Scouts working on their Eagle rank in 2024.

Four scouts, Oliver Wells, Peyton Perdue, Dane Dunkle, Tim Moler, and Matt Moler earned their 50-miler award.

The Troop participated in nearly two dozen service projects. Some of the more significant projects were to build a second blessing box for one of Brookville’s food pantries, the retirement of several hundred flags, and the Christmas lights at Golden Gate Park.

The Troop voted two scouts, Jonathan Wood and Oliver Wells, to join the Order of the Arrow (OA). Adult leader Jon Wells was also nominated and joined the OA. Adult leaders Erik Wood and Matt Moler completed their brotherhood requirements.

Life Scout Oliver Wells was the Troop’s merit badge king in 2023, earning 18 merit badges. Other merit badge leaders were Tim Moler, Peyton Perdue, Jonathan Wood, Calen Robinson, Cal Riley, Dane Dunkle, Oliver Hart, and Trent Hans.

Nineteen scouts earned 130 merit badges. That is more merit badges than the past two years combined.

“These young scouts are not only shaping their own character but also leaving an indelible mark on the community they proudly serve. I’m very proud of them,” remarked Todd Clemmons, the Troop’s committee chair.

Starting in 1917, Troop 47 is the longest continuously chartered Troop in the country. The Troop has 22 scouts and 14 adults and is chartered by Brookville Amvets Post 1789.
