Devils put the ‘Wood’ to Jacks

OAKWOOD — Behind a career high 43 points from Jace Wood and outstanding total team play by everyone, the Brookville Blue Devils went to The Pit in Oakwood and chopped down the Lumberjacks 87-70.

Wood was the beneficiary of great team basketball. Wood scored the most points but consider Brookville made 32 baskets during the game and had a team total of 27 assists. The 87 points scored by Brookville may be the most under a Jeff Davidson coached team. It also may be the most points scored in three decades by Brookville in a game.

The Blue Devils shot an amazing 62.7 percent in the game making 32 of 51 shots. That includes 11 for 18 from long distance. Brookville grabbed 27 rebounds. Had 27 assists, 10 steals, and three blocked shots. The only bad stat was Brookville made only half its free throws, 12 of 24 during the game.

The win lifted Brookville to 14-6 on the season and 6-5 in SWBL Buckeye Division play. Oakwood dropped to 16-4 overall and 10-2 in Division play. Brookville has defeated, on consecutive Tuesday night games, the champions of both divisions in the SWBL on the road.

Oakwood grabbed the early lead in the game and led 12-9 in the first period. Brookville would then score seven straight markers as Wood hit a lay-in and a trifecta. Keegan Mehr added a hoop and it was 16-12 Brookville.

The Lumberjacks got a pair of hoops by Owen Hoersting to tie the game at 16. Then Cole Crabtree drained a three and Brookville led 19-16. However, in the final minute P.J. Bremner scored a basket and a charity shot to tie the game at 19 to end the first quarter. Wood had ten points for Brookville, Crabtree five, and Mehr four.

The teams exchanged baskets to begin the second period before Brookville broke off a ten-point run to snag a 31-21 lead. Jace Wood scored on a drive, Cole Crabtree drilled a three-pointer, Dom King made two free throws and Wood played string music from long distance.

The game went back and forth the rest of the half until Brendan Fisher made a three-point hoop as time expired in the first half. Brookville led 43-30 at the intermission. Brookville won the second quarter 24-11 to grab control of the game. Wood scored seven, Crabtree six, Fisher five, and King, Braedan Smart, and Mehr two points each.

The third frame saw surges by both teams. Wood, having a career night, scored 14 points in the frame as Brookville would win the period 26-23. Brookville twice led by 23 points in the quarter. The last was at 69-46 before Oakwood scored the final seven points to trail by 16 heading into the fourth quarter.

Besides Wood, Brookville got six from Crabtree, and two points each from Fisher, Smart, and Coltin Lawson.

Nathan Waggoner started the final stanza with a free throw for Brookville. Oakwood continued their run closing to within 11 points with 4:10 remaining the game. However, Brookville would end the game on a run of 12-6 to walk out of the Pit with a hard earned 87-70 win.

King scored two, Smart made a basket, Crabtree hit a free throw, and Waggoner added a charity shot in the frame. Those points added to the 12 markers from Jace Wood gave Brookville 24-17 win in the stanza.

Oakwood was led in scoring by Aiden Jacomet with 22, Jackson Thobe with 14, and Chris Jenkins and Owen Hoersting with ten points each.

Brookville individual stats show Jace Wood with a career high 43 points and seven rebounds. Woods scored ten points in the first quarter, seven in the second frame, 14 markers in the third period, and finished with 12 points in the final stanza.

Cole Crabtree added 18 points, five assists, and three steals. Brendan Fisher played great team ball with seven points, five rebounds, and a team high seven assists. Keegan Mehr had six points, three assists, and three steals.

Braedan Smart scored six points, snagged three rebounds, and had three assists. Dom King had a great game with four points, four rebounds, six assists, four steals and solid point guard play. Coltin Lawson tallied two points and Nathan Waggoner one point.

Brookville will host Milton-Union on Friday, Feb. 16, to close out the regular season. The game will be broadcast on Brookvillesports.com beginning at 7 p.m.
