COLUMBUS — Preble Shawnee senior Riley Stevenson capped off a stellar career with a sixth-place in the Division III portion of the 87th Annual Boys State Wrestling Tournament Friday through Sunday, March 8-10 at the Schottenstein Center.
Stevenson was the highest finisher among the six local boys to compete at the state tournament.
Stevenson, who became the Arrows’ all-time winningest wrestler earlier this season, finished the year 43-8 after going 3-3 at the state tournament and is a two-time state placer.
Stevenson, who wrestles at 175, opened the state tournament with an 11-4 win over Gavin Richards of Nelsonville-York.
In his quarterfinal match, Stevenson lost by pin in 1 minute, 27 seconds to Aiden Helme of Tinora.
Stevenson then won his next two matches by 1-0 scores. He beat Hines Ford of Barnesville in the second consolation round then toppled Brandon Bruce-Bey of Trinity.
He dropped his next two matches to finish sixth.
Stevenson’s teammate, Nolan Earles went 1-2 at 126 pounds. He ended the season with a 36-11 record.
He opened the tournament against defending state champion Abe Hermes of Milan Edison and dropped an 11-7 decision. Earles held a 7-6 lead until the final minute of the match before Hermes scored on a takedown and a nearfall to pull out the win.
Earles won his first consolation match 16-6 over Jordan Noble of Bridgeport before having his season end with a 13-5 loss to Jericho Quinter of Covington.
Brookville sent a trio to state and all three went 1-2.
Hayden Jones (45-5) dropped his first-round match 14-6 to Chance Wuhr of Lake Catholic. He bounced back with a pin of Jesse Pemberton of Caldwell in 29 seconds. Jones had his season end with a 14-7 loss to Braedyn Tammarine of Liberty Center, who went on to place third at 106 pounds.
Luke Dolan began his quest for a state title with an 11-6 win over Reginald Banies of Trinity in the first round of the 150-pound weight class.
In the quarterfinal, Dolan dropped a 15-6 decision to eventual state runner-up Daxton Chase of Pleasant. Dolan’s tournament run came to an end to league opponent Zeran Brady of Valley View, 10-8.
Dolan finished the season 51-4.
Trenton Brooks wrapped up his season 37-8. He won his first match 2-1 in an ultimate tiebreaker over Brycen Dunlap of Monroeville.
In the quarterfinal, he fell 2-1 in sudden victory to Cohen Riggenback of Dalton and his season ended with a 5-2 loss to Clayton Downs of Garaway.
In Division I, Northmont’s Landon McCargish went 0-2 to finish the season 31-8. He fell in the opening round 18-3 to Andrew Myers of Upper Arlington and was pinned in the consolation round by Ethan Leu of GlenOak.
