EATON — A former school resource officer accused of having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a student has been indicted by a Preble County grand jury, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced Monday, April 1.

Mason Williams, 26, of 135 Ocean Drive in Eaton, was charged with two counts of sexual battery and one count of tampering with evidence. Each count is a third-degree felony.

Williams was assigned to serve as the National Trail High School resource officer and has been placed on administrative leave.

The case was investigated by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and is being prosecuted by Yost’s Special Prosecutions Section.

According to the bill of indictment, Williams on or about Oct. 1, 2023-March 20 of this year “did engage in sexual conduct with (a person born in 2005) not his spouse, while (he) was a teacher, administrator, coach or other person in authority employed by or serving in a school which (the person) was enrolled in or attended, and he was not enrolled in or attending that school.” It also includes a second sexual battery charge for an offense occurring in the same timeframe in Butler County, “but was continuing course of conduct originating within Preble County,” and tampering with evidence charge alleging Williams “did knowing that an official proceeding or investigation was in progress or was about to be or likely to be instituted, alter, destroy, conceal or remove any record, document or thing, with purpose to impair its value or availability as evidence in such proceeding or investigation. “

“Indictments merely contain allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law,” Yost’s office said in a press release.

A Preble County grand jury on Monday, April 1, also indicted Calvin Ray Keener of 601 Ivy Court in Eaton, on charges including pandering sexually-oriented matter involving a minor or impaired person (three counts,) unlawful sexual conduct with a minor (three counts,) tampering with evidence (three counts,) and disseminating matter harmful to juveniles, (three counts.)

According to court records, the grand jury in its bill of indictment found Keener, on or about Jan. 13, “did with knowledge of the material or performance involved, create, record, photograph, film, develop, reproduce or publish material that shows a minor participating or engaging in sexual activity.”

It also notes Keener, on or about Jan. 12-Feb. 13, “did engage in sexual conduct with another person,” when he “knew the other person was 13 years of age or older but less than 16 years of age, or was reckless in that regard. Furthermore, it continues, “the offender is at least four years older than the person with whom the offender engaged in sexual conduct and the offender was 10 or more years older than the other person.”

The indictment also specifies that on or about Jan. 12-Feb. 13, Keener “did, knowing that an official proceeding or investigation was in progress or was about to likely be instituted, alter, destroy, conceal or remove any record, document or thing, with purpose to impair its value or availability as evidence in such proceeding or investigation,” and “did recklessly sell, deliver, furnish, disseminate, provide, exhibit, rent or present to a juvenile, or a law enforcement officer posing as a juvenile, or a group of law enforcement officers posing as juveniles material or performance that is obscene.”
