Girl Scouts plan to build rock garden

BROOKVILLE — The park board approved a request from Girl Scout Troop 33428 to establish a “kindness” rock garden in Golden Gate Park.

According to the information provided to the board by the Girl Scouts, the project consists of creating a rock garden filled with painted rocks that have positive messages written on them.

“We would encourage the community to continue the positive rock messages by bringing their own rocks they made and leave them in the garden,” the information from the Girl Scouts said in the information they provided to the park board.

The information also stated anyone is encouraged to take one of the rocks if the message on the rock proves to be motivational and/or inspirational.

The Girl Scouts suggested two possible locations for the rock garden:

• along the outside of The Castle playground

• around the McMaken grove

The Girl Scouts said the purpose of the project is to help them obtain a Silver Award.

On the girlscout.org website, “ a Silver Award can be obtained by identifying an issue that affects the community and then developing a project that will lead to lasting change.”

The website also noted “a silver award is the second highest award a Girl Scout can get.”

“Only 10 percent of Girl Scouts get their silver award and our troop would love to get it and help bring others joy,” the information provided by the Girl Scout troop stated.

The Girl Scouts indicated they would like to complete the project by May.

City manager Jack Kuntz supported the project.

“It’s a simple thing, but it’s something the Girl Scouts feel is a good opportunity for them to spread kindness in the community,” Kuntz said.

“The project can have a big impact, but it doesn’t require a lot of work on their part and it doesn’t take up any extra space,” Kuntz continued.

Park board member Loren Wilson favored the project.

“It’s great that the Girl Scouts would put this on and I think other kids in the community would like to do it, too. My kids love painting rocks,” Wilson said.

Of the two suggested areas for the rock garden, park board president Adam Blevins suggested The Castle Playground as the best location.

“I like the idea of putting it in an area outside The Castle playground,” Blevins said.

Park board member Carolyn Haney agreed.

“That area probably gets the most traffic,” Haney said.

The park board agreed with allowing the Girl Scouts to build the rock garden outside The Castle playground with the provision that the garden will be removed if it becomes a nuisance or a safety issue.
