Brookville rallies late to defeat Dixie

BROOKVILLE — With three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh Wednesday, the Brookville baseball team rallied late to post a 5-4 victory over Dixie.

The Blue Devils took a 1-0 second inning lead. Jace Wood hit a one out single to right and advanced to second on a passed ball. Hunter Gray reached on a shortstop error which allowed Wood to score.

Dixie answered with two runs in the top of the third. Brayden Puckett drew a leadoff walk and J.R. Bemis also drew a walk. Puckett reached third and Bemis second on a passed ball. An error at shortstop enabled the next batter, Cole Johnson, to reach second with Puckett and Bemis scoring.

The Greyhounds added two more runs in the top of the fifth. Bemis drew a walk and Johnson got hit by a pitch. Kaiden Hypes came in to pinch run for Johnson. Kole Huffman drew a walk to load the bases.

Carson Sexton hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Bemis with Hypes and Huffman holding their bases. After a fielder’s choice Hypes advanced to third with Huffman out at second. Dillon Phillips singled to score Hypes as Dixie took a 4-1 lead.

Brookville tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Lucas Horn hit a leadoff single and Wood singled to right with Horn advancing to third and Wood to second on the throw back to the infield.

Hunter Gray hit a fly out to right field with Wood getting doubled off third for a double play. Horn scored on the same play. Seth Hoover hit a line drive single to left to and Cole Crabtree singled to right to put runners at first and second.

Sam Fullenkamp followed with a triple to right to score Hoover and Crabtree to knot the game at 4-4.

Brookville secured the comeback with one run in the seventh. Kayde Baker led off and reached on an error at third. Baker advanced to second on a wild pitch. Landon Trent got hit by a pitch.

With Lucas Horn at bat Baker advanced to third on a passed ball. Horn grounded out to the pitcher with Baker holding at third and Trent advancing to second.

Wood hit a ground ball to shortstop J.R. Bemis who threw the ball to the plate but Baker beat the throw as the Blue Devils walked away with a 5-4 victory.

Fullenkamp earned the victory in relief. He pitched one inning, gave up no hits and no runs.

Cole Johnson took the loss for Dixie. He pitched two-thirds of an inning with no hits, one run and one walk.

With the victory Brookville improved to 10-6 overall. Dixie fell to 6-8.
