Waynesville scores late to defeat Brookville

BROOKVILLE — With the game tied 2-2 Waynesville scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning Wednesday to hand Brookville an 8-3 defeat to end a four game Blue Devils win streak.

The Blue Devils only managed to generate two hits and committed five errors.

Kayde Baker went one for two with a pair of walks and drove in all three of Brookville’s runs. Starting pitcher Hunter Gray also went one for two. Gray pitched five innings, surrendered nine hits and seven runs (three earned) with a pair of walks and five strike outs.

Landon Trent pitched two innings in relief and surrendered three hits and one run with a walk and three strike outs.

Brookville took a 2-0 first inning lead. Lane Willoughby drew a lead off walk. Nathan Waggoner reached on an error by shortstop Isaac Squire with Willoughby advancing to third. Waggoner stole second.

Baker followed with a two out line drive single to center field to drive in Willoughby and Waggoner.

Waynesville scored a run in the top of the third. Jackson Garner hit a leadoff single to left and reached second on a wild pitch and third on another wild pitch. Jonas Berger reached on an error by Waggoner at second base with Garner scoring.

The Spartans tied the game in the top of the fourth. Peyton Frederick hit a leadoff single and reached second on a sacrifice bunt by Luke Bulach. Frederick advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on another passed ball to make it a 2-2 game.

Waynesville took control of the game with six runs in the top of the sixth. Bulach drew a leadoff walk. Nick Warren reached on a bunt single with Bulach advancing to third on an error by Gray. Garner singled to right to score Bulach with Warren advancing to second.

Connor Berrey came in to pinch run for Garner. Adam Papanek laid down a bunt and reached on an error by Gray to load the bases. Sam Papanek got hit by an errant pitch to drive in Warren. At that point Gray was lifted with Trent coming in to pitch in relief.

Trent struck out Jonas Berger but Squire followed with a single to left to drive in Berrey. Ben Freese hit a line drive single to left to bring A. Papanek home. Frederick struck out looking but Bulach singled on a ground ball to left to score S. Papanek with Squire scoring on the throw as the Spartans took an 8-2 lead.

Brookville got one run in the bottom of the seventh. Willoughby and Waggoner drew back-to-back walks and with one out Braden Chambers drew a walk to load the bases. Baker also drew a walk for force in Willoughby but relief pitcher Ben Freese struck out Cole Crabtree on a foul tip to end the game.

Berger earned the victory on the mound for Waynesville. He pitched six innings and surrendered two hits, two unearned runs with five walks and one strike out. Freese worked one inning in relief. He didn’t allow a hit but walked four with one earned run and one strike out.

With the victory Waynesville improved to 7-8 overall and to 5-4 in Southwestern Buckeye League play. Brookville fell to 13-7 and 5-3.
