EATON — In a special ceremony at the Preble County Fairgrounds on Wednesday, May 15 , the Eaton Police Division bid farewell to one of its most beloved members, retired K9 Shadow.

Shadow’s health had rapidly declined in recent days, according to EPD officials.

The news of Shadow’s death has saddened many in the community he served faithfully for years.

During his tenure with the Eaton Police Division, K9 Shadow was deployed over 300 times, showcasing dedication and valor in every mission. His duties ranged from assisting in search warrants to conducting school walkthroughs, tracking suspects, and sniffing out narcotics. His contributions were instrumental in ensuring the safety and security of Eaton and its residents.

Beyond his operational duties, K9 Shadow was a beloved member of the community, often seen participating in various events and demonstrations. From school events to engagements with organizations like the YMCA and Rotary, Shadow’s presence left a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of meeting him. He was a regular fixture at community gatherings such as National Night Out and Cops and Kids.

As K9 Shadow took his final journey, he was surrounded by his fellow K9 comrades, handlers, and loving family members, who had stood by his side throughout his public safety career. The loss of such a dedicated and loyal companion has deeply affected Shadow’s handler, Officer Craig Jones, and his family, and and EPD post on Facebook encouraged everyone to keep them in their thoughts. Many condolences were shared on the EPD’s page.

Although K9 Shadow may no longer patrol the streets of Eaton, his legacy will continue to live on in the hearts and memories of all those whose lives he touched in the community he served with honor and distinction.

K9 Shadow was the second Preble County K9 to be laid to rest in recent weeks. On Wednesday, May 8, the Lewisburg Police Department said goodbye to retired K9 Apollo, who also had health complications.
