EATON — The Ohio Department of Education nominated 26 schools in Ohio to compete to be one of two nationwide. Eaton Community Schools’ William Bruce Elementary School is in the running to be one of them.

Black Walnut Festival a ‘fabulous weekend’

CAMDEN — “Nuts” were welcome at Camden’s 35th Annual Black Walnut Festival, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 21-22. The community’s large-scale craft show and festival hosted over 160 vendors and included a parade, car show, live entertainment, and of course, black walnuts. Families could find something for everyone, from a beer and wine garden to the fun Kid Zone. Organizers Camden Comeback posted on Facebook a thank you for everyone who helped make this year’s festival a success: “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you! To everyone who came out to this year’s Black Walnut Festival, to our wonderful vendors, to our generous sponsors and donors, to all our great volunteers, to the incredible musicians and bands, to the workers who handle everything from our electricity to face painting, and to the Village of Camden and staff — we can’t adequately express how much we appreciate every single one of you. It was a fabulous weekend.”

BROOKVILLE — Planning commission approved a preliminary recommendation of R-1A (suburban residential) zoning for the 113.562 acres of land in Perry Township recently annexed to the city of Brookville.

Area football teams ready for playoffs

COLUMBUS — Following the conclusion of the football regular-season last Saturday (Oct. 21), the Ohio High School Athletic Association released the first-round playoff pairings Sunday afternoon. All first-round games will be played on Friday, Oct. 27, with kickoffs set for 7 p.m. The top eight seeds in each region will serve as hosts for the first-round games.

PREBLE COUNTY — Voters across Preble County will select candidates in several contested and non-contested races for seats on Eaton City Council, village councils, boards of public affairs, boards of township trustees, and school boards on their Tuesday, Nov. 7 general election ballots. Villages will also elect their mayors.

‘Penny Doe’ identity to be released next month

EATON — The identity of the female called “Penny Doe,” whose body was exhumed in Mound Hill Cemetery over four years ago, has been determined and will be announced next month, officials said earlier this week.
